Opening Activity: Macy's plans to hire 78,000 people for seasonal jobs

4.  I would make this a broadcasting journalism piece by interviewing Macy employees- especially the manager. Interviewing people looking for a job and what this means to them. You can put in the piece of unemployment and how major companies are beginning to go upward in hiring more people. I would shoot Macy's store, inside, outside, the sign, I would add footage of consumers.

Opening Activity: 38 Dogs taken from home near Hibbing, Minnesota

Authorities rescued 38 starving Siberian Huskies in Orr, Minnesota. The owner, Deborah Anne Boucha, sent a note to the Hibbing sheriff saying that she and her dogs were starving. The dogs were taken from the home and brought to Range Regional Rescue in Hibbing. The dogs were diagnosed with dehydration, anemic and underweight. The dogs are on hold from adoption for 10 days while the court proceedings move forward.

It is very good that these dogs were taken. All of the Huskies were starving and the authorities rescued the animals. I was glad Boucha was brave enough to say that she could not provide for the dogs. Hopefully all of the animals will find a home during the adoption process

Opening Activity: Two hikers released from Iranian jail after 2 years in prison

Shane Bauer and Josh Fattal are finally being released from prison. Both men were released for $1 million dollar bail. Bauer and Fattal were convicted of spying in 2009 while hiking in the mountains on the border of Northern Iraq and Iran. I think it is awesome that these 2 men can finally be released after Bauer's future wife (who he proposed to in prison) are free. I am glad that they can finally see their families once again.

Filling the silence

1. Non- question/Question: This is where you talk about something in a normal conversational tone and sometimes you can get a sound bite.

The rules of three:
1. They will tell you the answer you want to hear.
2. They will explain their answer.
3. They will blurt something that gives you a sound bite. This can sometimes be acquired by holding the silence.

Opening Activity: State to review online schooling

The state of Minnesota will be reviewing the online schooling program. The state currently has at least 20,000 students who take at least one online class. They found that the students who take full time online classes, they do not do as well in the standardized testing for math. Also the dropout rate has gone up. 25% of 12th graders dropped out of school.

Opening activity: Jonesboro shootings

The story is about 4 kids and 1 student killed in a attack by two student boys and Westside Middle School. The two boys were Andrew Golden and Mitchell Johnson. A reason why the shootings could have occurred is because Johnson had a bad relationship with his father. Johnson also was charged during the same year for molesting a 2 year old girl. He had a in school suspension. Golden was known as a good kid, and did participate in gun competitions and liked to shoot animals and kids with BB guns. Both students had previously just broken up with their girlfriends. The type of angle I would take is addressing the whole topic including how the people were and what they did. I also would want to address it to all people because this can teach every person.

Opening Activity: US postal service may begin to deliver slower

The United States Postal Service may have to change first class mail from being delivered 1-3 days to 2-3 days. The reason is because more jobs and processing stations will be cut after less mail being delivered.

I think it is very sad to see less mail being delivered leading to cuts in stations and jobs.  We also will have to change when we want something to be mailed since it will now take more time.

1. Significance: This is significant because it not only takes away and cuts jobs from the post office it will change the entire system on how first class mail is delivered
2. Proximity: It will take longer for us to get mail. This applies to all of us.

Opening Activity: Minnesota Wildfire

The growth of the  Wildfire in Northeastern Minnesota should begin to slow down. The calmer winds Wednesday have helped to keep the wildfire from spreading even further. The wildfire is one of the largest in Minnesota state history. It began at the Boundary Waters Canoe area and spread a grand total of 160 miles. The smoke has drifted as far as Chicago and Milwaukee. The Boundary Waters remains open, but some areas continue to remain open. No buildings have been burned down and no injuries have been reported. A pollution warning remains in effect in Chicago. Some people report there eyes burning. It is a good thing that the fire is slowly coming to an end. I am glad that no person has been hurt and the trained firefighters did a good job of keeping everything under control. People should be alert and aware of any symptoms in case they have been bothered by the smoke. Also, people should be alert in case the fire starts again and be ready to evacuate.

Opening Activity: Google+

I feel that Google+ can be successful, but it will never reach the height of Facebook. The gaming idea is a wonderful idea and can attract many people, but Google needs to find a way to attract these people. Facebook currently has the people and can continue to get better and better without advertising. Once Google can start to hook people, the chain reaction will be everyone getting a Google+ account. Until Google can find a way to get the hook, the numbers will continue to slowly go up.

Opening Activity: MLB players remember 9/11

The article describes where several players were during the events of 9/11.  For all of the players, it was a shock. People like Ted Lilly, one of the older players interviewed, played for the New York Yankees at the time being. He remembers smelling the ash in the air and wishing he could do something for his country. MLB.com also interviewed players as young as eighth graders. Clayton Kershaw, a pitcher for the Los Angeles Dodgers remembers seeing his history teacher turn on the television and then quickly turning it off because the picture was so horrific. All of the players interviewed still vividly remember 9/11. They will never forget.

Opening activity

The article is about the Minnesota Twins and the young players coming up from the minors not having sound fundamentals. The Twins have disappeared from the normal form of sound mechanics and "playing smart" while on the field. The Twins blame it on themselves, but also the individual. The Twins, who are always labeled as playing the game the right way have lost most of that this year, which has led to one of their worst years since 1999. Twins manager Ron Gardenhire believes that the Twins need to find a new way to help develop the players because when the players are called up, Gardenhire says they are not ready for the Major League level.
